The first World Series of Poker tournament started already in the 70's at the casino Binion's Horseshoe in Las Vegas. The first tournament attracted modest seven participants and the winner was Johnny Moss from USA. Not coincidentally, the same man also took home the victory the year after with impressive play. The tournament has since then increased the number of participants for each year and after the big poker boom, WSOP 2004 attracted over 2500 participants.
WSOP lasts several weeks and includes competitions in all poker games including No Limit Texas Hold'em and Pot Limit Omaha. The biggest tournament of them all is of course the Main Event of No Limit Texas Holdem with buy-in of $10,000 and a first prize of several million dollars.
To qualify for the World Series of Poker is easier said than done for most poker players. Your best chance to win your place in the 2011 Main Event is by qualifying through the WSOP satellites on the major poker rooms, PokerStars and Full Tilt Poker.
A satellite tournament gives you the chance to win a seat to the WSOP for as little as two dollars.
